Not sure if I even know what I'm talking about!!

Hi, and welcome to my first blog.  I'm at uni doing the final subject of my Masters of Marketing - Social Media Marketing. We've been asked to set up a blog to show we know what we're talking about when it comes to social media...

So, what do I know about social media? I first fell in love with myspace back when it was cool. My love was short-lived and I'm now in a long-term relationship with Facebook, logging/checking in every chance I get, at home, at work, on the train, you name it. I've had job interviews where I was found on LinkedIn, I work in the automotive industry and use YouTube to showcase our cars. I use Flickr to see my nephew grow up in Canada.  I failed miserably at micro blogging on Twitter and I'm still trying to get that invite to Google+. If you invite me, I pinky swear not to bombard you with invites to games like Farmville and horoscope updates!?

I now also know some amazing stats about social media after class last week...

And, that's about the extent of my SMM knowledge.

What i really want to know is whether my habits are normal? Is it normal to check Facebook 15-20 times a day? Or, have you bucked the trend and deleted your profile??  Who else has tried and failed on Twitter? (if not, should I be following you?) Have you used LinkedIn for work? And honestly, do you still use myspace if you're not a musician??

Look forward to sharing this space with you.

  1. Great blog Sarah! Yep I've only restarted 'Twitter' now that I can tweet my blogs! I also reckon updating fb status more than half a dozen times a week is too much. Oh and checking it 15-20 times may suggest you have issues ;)

  2. Hi Sarah! I never really got into myspace. I created an account once, but never used it. I recently joined LinkedIn, and will soon be trying twitter as well. I tend to check my facebook account whenever I go online for the first time, or when I come back to my computer. It has just become routine for me.

  3. A brilliant start to your blogging career, Sarah!

    Are you "normal"? You bet! See this report from Sensis, which shows that you are very normal with that level of Facebook usage: Sensis Social Media Report 2011

  4. Thanks for your comments guys, it's nice to know I am "normal" (even if Hubba doesn't think so!) - according to the stats Wags posted, 93% of my age group use social media sites daily!
    Ivan - I agree about the routine aspect, I turn on my computer and the first programs opened are Outlook and Facebook! And LInkedIn is a great way to keep in contact with business associates who you don't really want to 'friend' on facebook!

  5. @Hubba - I'm running a little 'poll' on FB and it seems 20-20+ is 'normal' - but I guess it's true- people associate with other people with similar interests/habits/preferences.... :)

    @Sarah - Love the blog. I will send you a G+ invite... x

  6. @Sarah and Hubba, the week before semester started I saw Wags on blackboard with all his fancy twitter bits and pieces, so decided to join in anticipation of this unit. But until now I only follow one person (Wags) and have only one follower (Wags). So I am a sad twitter case!

    I do use SM quite often, FB I would say would average out to once a day. Being the fan that I am of G+, I will start using it more, I have to admit though, I am learning a lot about it still and figuring out what to do where and who I consider friends (haha).

    I think I have a Myspace account, I think someone set one up for me a few years ago, but I wouldn't even know what my username is.
